Marcille is an elf who hails from what appears to be a fairly typical RPG high fantasy world, whose population is made up of races like humans, orcs, gnomes, elves, and halflings; when the manga begins, she has set herself up with an exploration party whose mission is to explore (and hopefully conquer) a famous dungeon. Specifically, the dungeon was once a prosperous castle kingdom which was cursed and sank into the ground, only to partially resurface after the establishment of a small town on the spot where the kingdom once stood. At present, the dungeon is rumored to be ruled by a mad sorcerer, and an entire economy has been established around selling to the adventurers who plumb its depths, looking for sweet loot.
Marcille was hired by a party run by the Thorden siblings, a brother and sister team who have taken interest in the dungeon. Though she's best friends with the sister, Farin Thorden, Marcille also had a personal interest in the dungeon, as she sees it as an opportunity to research forbidden magics. Unfortunately, Farin is killed during a dungeon run; though the rest of the party barely manages to escape, half of the members desert, leaving Laius Thorden to lead a desperate charge back into the dungeon to resurrect his sister's body before it's too late to save her.
Marcille volunteers to accompany Laius, along with Chilchack the halfling and an odd duck dwarf named Senshi. To her great dismay, however, almost all of the party's inventory has been left in the dungeon, leaving the party extremely strapped for funs. Laius, determined to save his sister right away, insists that the party begin hunting and eating dungeon monsters to survive on the mission. With Senshi's dungeon-crawling and culinary expertise, this plan turns out to be possible, though Marcille is absolutely revolted by the plan of action at every turn.
Dispatching cockatrices, mandrakes, fishmen, kelpies, and all manner of creatures, Marcille and company are finally able to descend to the dungeon level where the red dragon who ate Farin lives. Though they are barely able to defeat the dragon, it turns out that Farin's body has been digested, leaving only her bones. Utilizing her knowledge of forbidden magic, Marcille manages to resurrect Farin using dragon meat for raw materials.
Unfortunately, the mad sorcerer appears to attack the party, and Farin mysteriously disappears. The party is forced to head back to the surface, where they meet with a party consisting of one of their original party deserters and a second group of ambitious adventurers. Personality:
Marcille is a resolute, intelligent, slightly spoiled student of magic and (somewhat secretly) forbidden magic. She spends her time dungeon crawling in order to better understand the magical potential that naturally springs up from within the ecology of the dungeon, and in particular the dungeon ruled by the famed Mad Sorcerer. A valuable member of the Thorden siblings’ original party, Marcille was best friends with Farlyn Thorden, the soft-hearted white mage – at least until Farlyn was eaten by a Red Dragon.
Determined to rescue Farlyn even with half their original party numbers, Marcille decides to join her older brother Laios in a near-suicide mission to re-descend through the dungeon as quickly as possible to find the dragon and resurrect Farlyn. In so doing, Marcille is willing to risk life and limb… though Laios’s other
survival decisions do sometimes give her pause.
The top graduate in her class at the Magic Academy, Marcille is book-smart, but somewhat inexperienced in practice; while she has powerful magic and plenty of textbook know-how, this very knowledge can sometimes lead to her insisting on doing things the “proper” way when there’s a more down-and-dirty solution that would do just as well.
For example, while she was taught that the best way to harvest a mandrake is to tie one end to a dog and have the animal pull it up (and dying when it hears the mandrake’s scream), a more experienced adventurer reveals that it’s much more efficient to simply pull up the mandrake and slice through its head before it can scream. Similarly, Marcille is leery of field practices like eating dungeon monsters to save on food, or trying to ride a kelpie across a lake.
Marcille does loosen up on some of these insistences over time; for example, she ends up making an improvised bar of soap out of kelpie fat, drinking a water elemental to regain some lost mana, and even dining on a dead kraken. However, she's still the first to protest when her party members come up with particularly hare-brained schemes – like, say, creating improvised clothes out of giant frog skin.
One area in which Marcille does not
cleave to protocol, however, is in the study of forbidden magic. Marcille is surprisingly a devotee of the dark arts, including forbidden resurrection spells and dispel magic, under the general principle that even forbidden magic cannot inherently be good or bad, but only put to good or evil use. Aside from her friendship with Farlyn, one of her reasons for braving the dungeon of the Mad Sorcerer in the first place is to further research this branch of magic, and it is Marcille that suggests resurrecting Farlyn using the slain Red Dragon itself as sacrificial offering.
Conscientious about her appearance and fond of relative luxuries (particularly good food), Marcille often gives off the aura of a sheltered spellcaster. When needed, however, she’s capable of surprising improvisational skill, up to and including using explosive spells to propel herself out of danger. And while not a specialist in healing magic, she prides herself on the speed of her healing spells (if not the fine skill).
Though she is quick to complain, Marcille is also a stubborn, staunch companion and brave soul, willing to take on the dangers of an entire dungeon with a skeleton party of three in an attempt to save one friend.Abilities:
Marcille is an accomplished mage, capable of mostly offensive magic: flame and fiery explosions seem to be a particular forte, although she can also perform support skills such as protection magic, general healing (as from injury or status effects like poison and petrification), and a spell that lets party members walk on water. She is also capable of blessing-type spells to keep dead bodies from becoming possessed by wandering spirits.
Generally speaking, she's sensitive to magical power and well-versed in magical theory -- she can even make magical staffs! Though healing magic isn't really her specialty, Marcille is capable of things like reattaching limbs and other severe damage very quickly, though these spells lack finesse and can cause extreme pain for the subject. For example, she's able to reattach Laios's severed leg to more or less full capacity, though the process is painful and leaves part of the wound gristly and itchy until it can be attended to by a healer.
Marcille is also accomplished in forbidden magic, being capable of resurrecting the dead and dispelling dark magic constructs. Alignment:
Elios. While Marcille is emotionally expressive in generally, her canon emotions mostly fall on only one side of the other alignment ranges (appreciation, joy, distrust, anger, and fear). Love (for Farin, knowledge, and good food) and hate (of dealing with Senshi's disgusting beard and eating dungeon monsters) offers an alignment in which Marcille is likely to feel emotions along both sides of the range.Other: ⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉General Sample: http://empatheias-ooc.dreamwidth.org/185692.html?thread=25814620#cmt25814620http://empatheias-ooc.dreamwidth.org/168257.html?thread=21067841#cmt21067841Emotion Sample:
Marcille was hunched over a pile of wood scraps, scowling into the little splinters as she rubbed two little sticks together. Her hands weren't used to this sort of exertion, and the friction hurt her palms. But like hell was she going to admit she was no good without her magic! It was just a stupid campfire, so why was this such a problem?
"Light, dammit," she muttered to herself, cursing as she blew a little too hard and sent the little wood shavings all in a scatter away from the gently glowing end of one of the sticks.
" she cried at last. "Hurry up and -- "
All at once, the fire ignited, singing the ends of her eyebrows as she tumbled backwards away from the flame. "Y-you..." she sputtered, as if the flame had personally wronged her. "You did that on purpose!"
